We took Route 16 north which brings you up to the well known vacation area of Conway and North Conway. Most of the way it's fairly boring, until you reach this point ...
Yes, you better watch out for Moose! Though we have seldom seen them ourselves, there have been many collisions and deaths from people hitting a Moose with their cars. Usually at night though.
Suddenly after driving for an hour or so you realize that you are almost there! I have always loved this view. Look at all those telephone poles! Holy Cow!
We were all hungry so we stopped at the Yankee Smokehouse first thing, just like Brent and I did last fall, thinking the girls might like it as much as we did. Boy were we wrong! It was a lot of guys in flannel and snowmobile suits. At the time Andria still had multi-colored hair so she looked rather out of place. Everyone was staring. She put her hood on and refused to take it off until after we left. Elise didn't mind it so much but she was hoping we would go to McDonalds across the street instead. lol!
There were snowmobiles everywhere! At the restaurants, gas stations, convenience stores, and running down the sides of the roads. I grew up riding snowmobiles and we actually had one until last year, but due to a hectic life there was no time to use it anymore so we sold it. These days the girls would rather go shopping or to a friends house anyway when they have free time.
A beautiful old barn we saw on a back road. High snowbanks made it quite difficult to take pictures of most anything.
Including scenery . . .
On our way home we made a quick stop at Mt. Chocoroa. These pictures were taken from a little park and bridge at the end of Chocoroa lake. A place that would be nice to have a picnic on a warm summer day at one of the many picnic tables. On this day all I did was roll down the window because of the 16 degree temp outside.
At 3,490 ft, it's a bit of a hike, but almost 20 years ago I did just that with a friend and my dog, Norton (what a name, huh?).
It was a hike I wasn't prepared for, neither was Norton. Both of us were exhausted and pretty lame for the next few days. One thing I remember is that there were quite a few dogs at the top. I also remember the view being very scary. Wish I had more pictures to show you because in some places you could look down and it was a straight drop for hundreds of feet. Somehow I doubt I'll ever make that climb again.
Norton passed away in July of '93 at the age of 11 from Cancer. He was a great, great dog and it was a tough loss for our family, but we were so fortunate to have him as long as we did. Looking at these pictures helps me remember his gentle soul and loving nature.

Oh my gosh, Sharon - was Norton a malamute? Ted and I have owned several malamutes and we LOVE them! Beautiful scenery - the mountains are gorgeous.
Hi Laura : )
Actually Norton was a Siberian Husky. He was so beautiful and sweet. My mom and dad did all they could to save him after he was diagnosed with cancer, including taking him to Tufts for surgery. He lived an extra year and passed just 2 weeks before my oldest was born. They adopted another Husky after that but he turned out to be mean (bit several people including Brent and my niece) and died of a brain tumor. So sad. Sorry for the book!
Glad you enjoyed the scenery! Wish you could have seen all the snow!!!
What a gorgeous dog Norton was. I have lost a few pets in my days and while it is heartbreaking, I always appreciate the time I had with them just as you do.
Love the mountain photos. LOL about your kids. They would rather have MickieD's and day.
I love that drive. :) Conway is so gorgeous. I went camping up there this summer at a place called Terrace in the Pines.. its gorgeous.. be sure to check it out.
anyhow.. I enjoyed the pics.. and I'm jealous you went to the smoke house.. mmmmmmmm
I've never been to your neck of the woods, but how gorgeous those mountains are. I've never climbed a mountain either... bad back won't let me. Great post!

Kids - gotta love them. You are much braver than me - I have issues with heights, and the older I get, the worse it gets. Your photos are beautiful. Norton was a beautiful dog.
Have a great weekend.
The pictures of you and the dogs on the rocks are beautiful. I always worry so when people take their dogs on rocks like this. I'm sorry you lost Norton, but he lived a long time. I just lost my old friend last week. :(
So lovely. I miss snow . . . and the White Mountains.
I was in Conway a few weeks ago and they have more snow there than we do up here. Always love the Mt. Washington and Chocoroa areas. And love traveling between Conway and Lincoln in the summer. Great pics. Especially love the one with Norton at the summit. -Sandy
What a wonderful photo trip you provided for us!
This is a beautiful area Sharon. It is always sad when one of our pets pass away. That must have been some climb but well worth it to get to see the wonderful scenery.
Great pics Sharon! Believe it or not it's been a long time since I was up in that area. I have yet to go up there in the winter! Looks like they re-built the Smokehouse, last I was there they had a pig on top blowing out smoke!
The last picture of you and Norton put a lump in my throat. What a wonderful memory!
I admire your fearless nature. You'd never catch me on a peak like that.
Lovely photos, Sharon.

I've always wanted to visit your neck of the woods so I appreciated all your lovely photos! norton was a beauty!!
What beautiful countryside Sharon. So glad you all got to have that time together, even if the Smokehouse was not the happening place...lol.
Norton was a beautiful friend, and it's obvious how much he was loved.
Hi ,
I love the pictures especially the ones of that beautiful dog. They are such treasures. Our Laddie is getting old...I try not to think of being without him :(
I've been right there in those pictures. Not on top of the mountain though. I got queasy just looking at you looking over the top with Norton. He was a beautiful dog and I know you miss him deeply.
As always I love your pictures...but the ones with you and Norton on the top of the mountain...those were priceless!
Simply gorgeous scenery and pictures. Norton was beautiful! I am glad you have sweet memories of
him. I loved the drive. I am sorry people weren't nicer to our colorful girl. For petes sake it is just hair! Expensive hair!!! Sadly people do judge on looks though and onlt to find out they were wrong. I love her wonderful sense of adventure and strength but these experiences are probably teaching some lessons loud and clear. She is a sweet talented girl.
Valentines day isn't always this big and believe it or not the kids just wanted to run and play and I was too tired to encourage the activites planned so thats what they did. All the icing for the sugar cookies and cookies are still here and they are all gone home!!! The parents just wanted to visit and everyone had a great time.
Stay warm my friend.
That is such a beautiful drive! We were up there last week. It was crystal clear and you could see for miles! We stopped at the bbq place on the way home. I think there were more snowmobile riders than car customers that day. The food is wonderful! Thanks for sharing!
Anabelle, I know where Terrace in the Pines is. I'll have to look it up online!
Glenda, I have a terrible fear of heights too. My husband climbed the same mtn a few years later and even he said it was treacherous!
Phyllis, I'm so sorry for your loss. I'll stop by to see your friend. Yes, it a little scary seeing that other dog with no leash on and so close to the edge!
Sandy, someday I'll have to find out where you live in NH.
Sheesh Jay, I had forgotten about the big Pink Pig on top until you just mentioned it! lol!
Beth, glad you had a nice Valentines Day with your family! Andria has since gone back to all brown hair and seems happy about it, but she certainly has some great memories, stories and pictures for her kids! lol!
Shannon, same thing with us, lots and lots of snowmobilers!
Thank you all for the wonderful comments on Norton and I. He was originally my dog but when I moved back home he sort of became the family dog. However, he always held a special place in his heart for me. What a talker! lol!
When I moved out to live with my husband, he stayed at home with my mom and dad until the day he passed away. Even now my mom and I remember his loving one of a kind nature. He left big paw prints on our lives.
Okay, you have the BEST photos of anyone on the 'net. Wow. And that banner of yours is just breathtaking.
It looks like you live in the most beautiful place in the country. Thanks for sharing it with us all...
:^) Anna
Gorgeous gorgeous landscapes, and precious pups. All great memories, and that's what it's all about, isn't it -- living a life that you love photographing and reliving again and again?
Oh my Anna, talk about pressure! lol! Thank you : )
And thank you FL for stopping by!
Its a beautiful campground.. they do have a website... you can get a little site right on the water... with your own little lake beach. Devine!
Wow, gorgeous pics -- you really have some fabulous scenery up there! And what fun to see pics of your past. Norton sounds like such a sweet thing. :)
A great post and thanks for sharing the memories Sharon.
So lovely dog...
