Just look at the size of this thing! It's huge! I always wondered HOW the tracks were plowed but never knew. Now I do.
This particular plow looks fairly new. What a thrill it was to see it up close!
Please pardon the dumpster in the background. It was the best I could do while trying to get a full view shot from this angle.
As you can see there was one engine in the middle and a Wedge Snow Plow on each end. Pretty cool, huh? And this is why I bring my camera with me everywhere I go, because you just never know what you're going to run into! The next day it was gone so I would have missed my chance.
Not exactly the pride of the Boston and Maine railroad but this wedge plow does the trick! It appears this is an oldie but a goodie.
Since I wondered what a Snow Plow looked like going down the track I went straight to the source: Youtube
Sure enough I found this video and many others like it. Judging by the website these guys have, I would say they love watching the Snow Plow trains too! Enjoy!

Very cool. If not for your photos, I would have no idea what was behind that cloud of snow in the video. "Snow plow train" would be just words.

This was an enjoyable post for me as I had never seen a snow plow train either. My dad was an engineer for the UP railroad for almost 36 years. Our kids all enjoyed riding on the engine and blowing the horn. That was Massive!

I love the pictures....we have a train yard about 2 miles from our house and we've seen the plow train go through...they are pretty darn cool!

WOW! THAT is so cool! I've seen the smaller things they can fit on the front, almost like cow catchers of old, but nothing on this scale. My Sam will love watching this!

Wow! We gathered around to see your pictures and watch the film clips. My husband was born and raised in Maine and he said.."see? That's why I live in California!" I just looked at him blankly. Is he CRAZY?? But then he looks at me like I'm crazy too when I say "Let's go back to Maine and live!" So...there ya go! :) Enjoyed every minute of it.

We live in the Great Northwest and train plows roar through our mountains all winter. This winter they couldn't keep up with the snow and the rails were closed for days. Ours are rather different - they have rotary blowers. We have so much snow they need blow the snow up and out of the way. Which you were here to take pictures of them!
No, I’ve seen rotary snow throwers before, but never have I seen one of these bad boys.
What a small world! I don't even want to think about plow trains...I'm sick of snow. I love the bird pictures and your shots of Rye harbor are great too. It's cool you got the ice on the ocean. I haven't been able to brave the cold to get out there.
Found you thru Nancy and the fatties. Never heard of a snow plow train but I live in Florida. Your blog is beautiful,the snow, the birds,all of it. I am going to back and read some of the older posts. My most favorite aunt lives in Rye just down from the beach. With your photos I can be there with her, haven't been there in awhile.
