Red-tailed Hawk |
Just a side note. After trying for a year I was finally able to retrieve the full band # from his leg. Talk about exciting! I sent it out right away to a gentleman (Danny) who had been trying to help me ID this RTH recently. This is what he emailed back:
Thanks for getting the number. This is a rehabilitated bird banded in Maine in 2008. Its behavior suggests that it probably imprinted on humans during the rehabilitation process. This is an example of why we are not keen on the banding of rehabilitated birds. Often such birds get themselves into some kind of mischief or other and we end up getting a bad rap because the bird was banded.
What kind of mischief do you think Danny's talking about? He also recommended I report this bird to www.reportband.gov, which I did. They told me he was banded on May 20, 2008 to be exact and will email me a Certificate of Appreciation with additional information about this bird. When I find out more I'll let you know!

That is amazing! I have never seen anything like that! Really cool that you were able to get the band number and find more info. about RTH.
Wow! What a great series of pictures. What a magnificent bird. Thanks for sharing.
Sharon the Bird Detective - good job! And I'll skip the other pictures because I'm sure he is ripping that squirrel to pieces and eating it!
Fabulous post Sharon! How neat to get so close to one of these creatures. But I bet the owner of the car he was one was not too happy.
He's absolutely gorgeous. There's something about the raptors that I find particularly attractive...maybe it's the bad boy image I go for.
I'm all for rehabilitation programs. Frankly, the animals are often in a state of distress in the first place because of some harmful encounter with a human. Don't get me started...! ;o)
Excellent photos, as usual.
He's a beauty! Great investigative photo work on your part.

LOL Sharon, I am sitting her in my office cracking up here! I can only imagine what the owner thought! I would consider it an honor!!!
What FANTASTIC pictures you took and such interesting information regarding the hawk.
Super series of pictures Sharon & great to be able to learn something of its history.
Cheers FAB.
Sharon, what a great series of pictures. I love when there is an opportunity to get such clear close up shots. Wonder how the car roof was afterwards? It was for a good cause, though.
Jow exciting!! And what awesome photos.
Rita
How exciting!!
He is gorgeous.
You did a great job getting all the shots, too.
He probably was listening to you as you shot him....that is what I swear happened with the partridge I took, too.
We are bird whisperers. ha
Fantastic Sharon - you got some great shots indeed. I would hate to be the one to clean the car after hehe
dan

Awesome series Sharon! Maybe it came from the rehabilitation clinic near York, Maine.
Blood and all, I wouldn't mind walking out and seeing that Hawk on my car!
The car belongs to my next door neighbors, daughters, boyfriend. Got that? hee hee I guess he was a little freaked out by what was left on the top of his car so he had the daughter/girlfriend remove it. He's a city boy so he's not used to all the wildlife around here. Not that we live in the country but to him that's what it's like.
John, I didn't know there was a rehab center for wildlife near York, Me. For some reason I keep thinking Kittery, Me was where the banding was done but I don't know why. Maybe I heard it someplace, not sure. Either way he didn't travel far.
I don't think I mentioned it before but a couple people who stopped to watch asked if he was my pet because I was able to get so close to him! I swear he looks at me like he knows me, which after taking so many pictures of him this past year, I suppose he does!
Sharon
Amazing photos of an incredible bird. Thank you for sharing those!
Good job!
Remarkable. If I'd been there I would have been snapping away too.
How wonderful to get a close up of a magnificant bird such as him, we have buzzards here but I can never get close enough to capture them, looks like he has some prey there too.
That is SO cool! Uh, how was the owner of the Volvo feeling about all the squirrel entrails on the car... lol! Wonderful series of shots Sharon, and KUDOS to you for getting that band number. Seems to me he was just a RTH being a RTH!
Great shot! I like the red tail feathers. And what a noble profile!
Sharon,
Your photography is incredible! I love this shot and am clicking on the album to see more.
Wow - beautiful bird. He probabley did recognize you from taking photos of him before. :)
Glenda
Wow - not only the shots of the hawk, just amazing, but the banding info and finding out the history - terrific!
Exciting news and great capture too!
Well, I guess I would say you were in the right place at the right time...wow on top of a volvo..but that owner loved that...what a picture of the amazing creature..glad you stopped ...I don't think I could have driven past either..!!!!
That is so cool Sharon! I think the only trouble he could get in at my house would be SITTING ON MY CAR!!!!!! I would have to shush him off there for sure! Your other posts are just beautiful and the fly fishing one is very funny...
gret posts!
Just a fabulous set of pictures! Not sure I would have been brave enough to get so near. Thanks for sharing. What a gorgeous bird!
