First I asked Steve, since he has such great pictures that all seem to fit perfectly on his blog, Shooting My Universe. He directed me to a post he had written a while ago titled appropriately enough: Size Matters (The SMU Layout). I also spoke with Mary over on Mary's View. Another fantastic blog with gorgeous photos. Seems I confuse easily though because no matter what I did I couldn't get my pictures quite right (though I think I've finally figured it out on this most recent Frost post).
Then this morning I happened to see Southern Hospitality (love Rhoda's blog!) had a post titled: Fa-La-La! and a Blog Tip! How could I resist a blog tip?! So I headed on over and read her post. Rhoda explains resizing photo's in very simple terms that most anyone can understand. As a matter of fact I'm going to try using her suggestions in my next post. Somehow I think it's what Steve was trying to tell me all along, am I right Steve?
As for my template, I use Minima Stretch, which you will need to use if you're planning on using wide (800 px) pictures. If you ever want to figure out what someone is using for a template, go to their page, right click, then click on 'View Source'. Their whole html template will pop up. When I first started blogging and wanted to make a 3 column blog that's how I figured a lot of it out, by looking at other people's html. Yes, I'm a peeper, okay?

Thanks for all the research on sizing pics! I saved Rhoda's post in case I need it. I don't use Blogger to upload photos and rely on Flickr but I might need this information one day.
I can't remember what template I'm using... I think it's Minima Stretch also. I need to work out a way to put a photo in my header they way you did.

Mary, I stopped using Flickr for my large/wide pictures because I noticed the pictures were too wide. The right side doesn't show up on my post.
Picasa lets you choose an 800 px width instead of 1024 px on Flickr, so the whole photo is viewable. However, I like Rhoda's idea of being able to load regular pictures from my computer and then just changing the width and height manually.
I do think you need to have the Minima Stretch like you do in order to have wide pictures. Di, over on Blue Ridge Gal had to change hers from Minima to Minima Stretch and now the larger pictures fit just fine.
You asked about the tree's, Mary. No, they aren't mine. They are next to the local Fire Station. After I dropped my daughter off at work early this morning I stopped on the way home and took a few pictures as the sun was coming up and everything was still frosty. It almost looks like snow.

You can also make your pictures 500 px wide like Flickr does, which makes them a little bit larger than normal, and very nice. (I've added that note to the post)

First I found a background I liked (I already had this one), then I lightened it some in Photoshop. After that I uploaded it to Photobucket.
From there you have to go into your html. Not to far down you will see this:

text-align: center;
See the part I've highlighted? That is the code to your background color. Remove that and add this instead:
background-image: url(http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff13/penbroken/background-1.jpg);:#bca;
That's a cute background you might like, or use the code from the background you chose, whether it be from Photobucket, google pictures, or where ever. Make sure to use the 'http' code though or it won't work right.

Yes, the photo will multiply itself and fill up the whole background. Pretty neat!
Hope the photo tip helped you too. That way you would only have to upload your photo's once instead of Photobucket, then blogger. Man that's a lot of copying and pasting!

I'm having a hard time making the pics be 500px. It only works at 800, but I don't want them that large. Any idea why it won't work when I change it to 500 instead?
My apologies Alyson. I thought I had tried it and it worked. Apparently I was mistaken.
The only way to make your pictures 500 px would be to upload them to flickr then add the code directly into the html portion of your post. That's what I have done in the past. If you need help just send me an email.
