Wild Turkeys

Elise and I were driving along a back road on the way to her friends house when I spied these two just sitting in the woods. We turned around and went back so Elise could snap a few pictures with my camera.

(click on the photo for a good view of that head!)

See that little bit of greenery between them? That's what they were eating. Not much of a meal but they don't appear to be starving. I'll bet they were so happy with the warmer temps we had at the end of last week, only to be sent back into the big freeze this week.

Man they are some ugly birds! lol!

They sure are ugly, but I love the iridescent feathers! They look like they've gotten a few meals from somewhere.

They truly are ugly birds... and to think that Benjamin Franklin (at least I think it was him) wanted them to be our national bird, instead of the Eagle... NOT funny Benjamin!

I honestly never realized exactly HOW ugly they are until I looked at them close up in these pictures. Yikes! It's a face only a mother could love! Or another Turkey ; )

I can remember when we didn't have turkeys and they were reintroduced in Vermont. They do have a face that only another turkey could love...during mating season...

I LOVE your header with the cute kitty!!

Yes they are not the most pleasant on the eye, but their feathers are stunning.

I too am bummed about the cold temps we are supposed to get this week. Will winter ever end???!!!

Oh, I am one of those gals who love wild turkeys. Infact my DH gave me a wooden turkey caller for Mother's Day one year. Oh I love the header of Phineas, so handsome

Come on Steve, you're not THAT old! Even I don't remember that ; )

Glad you like the Phin header. He's a handsome fella!

DANG WOMAN...you get the best shots. Every time I've tried to get a picture of the turkeys its a big blur in the distance! And Ozzie wanted me to inform you that he really IS scary...honest. Thanks for the vote! I appreciate it...Ozzie was hoping to bite so he's a bit sad.

Yes, turkeys aren't the prettiest birds but their feathers are lovely. I find quite a few along my driveway. And your header photo is Phineas your cat's name? Beautiful cat!

Wish I could find a nice big Turkey tail feather!

Yes, Phineas is my cat. He's about 1 1/2 years old and a real looker!

PS-Beware the vicious Ozzie on Nikkicrumpets blog! lol!

They are really unique for sure, but like Laura said, something about the iridescent feathers are rather pretty. Wonderful shots!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder Sharon! I wonder how the Guinea Fowl rate their looks!!! hahahahaha!

Everyone's going to give these Turkeys a complex by saying how ugly they are! :)

Seriously, I love it when the Toms are drumming during mating season.

Very nice photos!

I don't know if I'd go so far as to say "ugly." Maybe not the prettiest bird or the cutest, but against the snowy backdrop you have, very striking.
And all those shades of blacks and browns are beautiful.

And I guess the part of me that loves to see them does so because I know stumbling upon them means there's space for them here--not all gone, yet.

They sure are getting all over the place! I've seen them on Banfield road by the dozen! And, there is just no way around it...they are ug-ly!

Eve, I think the Guinnea look rather cute with their blue ... stuff. lol!

MB, Let's just hope they aren't online reading this blog somewhere! Thanks for stopping by : )

Hi Nina, I agree, they are wonderful to see. It always gets me excited when I see them in someones yard or crossing a road.

HP, I haven't seen any on Banfield road but I have no doubt there are plenty in that area since there's quite a bit of woods.

Those are great close-up pictures. We get big flocks of turkeys here in my town in Connecticut. In fact, my town's name was originally going to be "Turkey Hills" because there are so many of them! They're funny birds to watch, aren't they?

You got it, girl! Your eye for photography is incredibly good. Those cats, with the light so perfect, and those darn ugly turkeys caught in a snowy woods. All perfect.

I'll never forget the year my aunt put the giblets from our Thanksgiving turkey outside in the back yard. Soon there were three or four turkey vultures enjoying a meal... which seemed a little like cannibalism to me, but I guess a meal is a meal...

Your pics are terrific, Sharon. Your daughter did a really good job.
