Elise and I were driving along a back road on the way to her friends house when I spied these two just sitting in the woods. We turned around and went back so Elise could snap a few pictures with my camera.

See that little bit of greenery between them? That's what they were eating. Not much of a meal but they don't appear to be starving. I'll bet they were so happy with the warmer temps we had at the end of last week, only to be sent back into the big freeze this week.

They sure are ugly, but I love the iridescent feathers! They look like they've gotten a few meals from somewhere.
They truly are ugly birds... and to think that Benjamin Franklin (at least I think it was him) wanted them to be our national bird, instead of the Eagle... NOT funny Benjamin!

I honestly never realized exactly HOW ugly they are until I looked at them close up in these pictures. Yikes! It's a face only a mother could love! Or another Turkey ; )
I've always thought they were ugly too.. my dad hunts them though.. and he swears they're the most beautiful birds alive lol i can't get past the big red floppy things on thier heads.
I can remember when we didn't have turkeys and they were reintroduced in Vermont. They do have a face that only another turkey could love...during mating season...

Oh, I am one of those gals who love wild turkeys. Infact my DH gave me a wooden turkey caller for Mother's Day one year. Oh I love the header of Phineas, so handsome

DANG WOMAN...you get the best shots. Every time I've tried to get a picture of the turkeys its a big blur in the distance! And Ozzie wanted me to inform you that he really IS scary...honest. Thanks for the vote! I appreciate it...Ozzie was hoping to bite so he's a bit sad.
Yes, turkeys aren't the prettiest birds but their feathers are lovely. I find quite a few along my driveway. And your header photo is Phineas your cat's name? Beautiful cat!

Yes, Phineas is my cat. He's about 1 1/2 years old and a real looker!

I don't know if I'd go so far as to say "ugly." Maybe not the prettiest bird or the cutest, but against the snowy backdrop you have, very striking.
And all those shades of blacks and browns are beautiful.
And I guess the part of me that loves to see them does so because I know stumbling upon them means there's space for them here--not all gone, yet.
They sure are getting all over the place! I've seen them on Banfield road by the dozen! And, there is just no way around it...they are ug-ly!

Those are great close-up pictures. We get big flocks of turkeys here in my town in Connecticut. In fact, my town's name was originally going to be "Turkey Hills" because there are so many of them! They're funny birds to watch, aren't they?

We have about 14 that travel together 'the wild turkey gang" they live in the woods behind our houses sonewhere and meander their way around the neighborhood and YES they sure are homely but cool just the same.

I'll never forget the year my aunt put the giblets from our Thanksgiving turkey outside in the back yard. Soon there were three or four turkey vultures enjoying a meal... which seemed a little like cannibalism to me, but I guess a meal is a meal...
