Have you ever seen one of these? In person? Alive???
I hadn't until this morning. And even then I wasn't quite sure what I was looking at. First I thought it was a Weasel but after doing a little research I realized it was actually an American Mink.
It's so cute! If you'd like to know a little more about them you can click here. I will tell you that they can spray like a skunk. Yikes!
They can also dive up to 16 feet deep! He left a little bubble trail every where he went.

so cool! now i am thinking we used to have them in our pond but for some reason i haven't seen them for over a year. the sides of the pond had little holes in it...

I have not seen one since I was a young child. They used to rob the hen house. But they are very pretty.

We have something in our lake that looks like that but we've never seen anything more than his head or tail for a second. I think ours might be a weasel but now I'm wondering! We think he has a nest under the ground that he swims to.

One of the first few posts that I did when I started blogging in April of 09 was about the American mink - I had one living in the back of my yard.
Like you I thought it was a weasel (but I didn't know they could spray). I have only seen it 2 more times and wonder now if it is even still back there.
And I live in the middle of suburbia - but have a tiny creek that runs thru the back of my yard.

My sister and I saw one down on the river banks and also first thought it was an otter or weasel. They are lightning fast critters, I know that!

I saw my first one earlier this spring. But it was bounding and I just got blurry shots. These are wonderful.
I HAVE seen one of these fellows. Cutest little face EVER! I followed it along the shoreline for a while. It kept stopping to see if I was still there. I didn't know what kind of creature it was and I had no idea I came so close to being sprayed. Eek.

We went camping and I was in a hammock and there were three of them playing around the hammock.

I can't recall how many mink coats I've seen in years gone by! This coat looks much better on him any day! Awesome pictures!
Minks are actually fairly common but very stealth. What is uncommon is your wonderful photos of these minks! Wow! Glad to have found a New England blogger that I can enjoy. Thank you very much.

What a super shot of it! they are rare to see, so you were so lucky! We went for a ride today and saw a pine marten which looks very similar and are rare here too...but it was too fast for me (running across the highway). We stopped and saw it at the edge of the woods, but it ran too deep into the woods too fast for me to get any shots of it.
