Broken Wings

Late in the summer of 2008 my husband found this vandalized bird nest in the middle of a row of Burning Bush' he was cutting back. At first I thought it was a rather exciting find, but then disappointment set in when I realized the eggs had most likely been ravaged by a squirrel. The reason I believe that to be true is because of the fairly intact shells. Had the babies survived the shells most likely would be competely crushed or thrown out of the nest by the mother bird.

I think these were Chipping Sparrow eggs, though I'm not positive.

There was one other nest with nothing in it so hopefully that one was a success. These little failures break my heart, even if it is all a part of nature.

Textures used: Tone Texture-9 by Shadowhouse Creations, Chaos (found on Flickr), and a random no-name texture I also found on Flickr.

How do you know for sure that they are failures by looking at them? How beautiful they are though! Wonderful photo! xxx

A poignant reminder that life and death are all part of the fabric of nature. Fortunately in the grand scheme life over comes death, it will always find a way.

Or maybe a cowbird? I understand that they will ravage another bird's nest. Sad.

Is there a chance the babies could have escaped? Love the color of the eggs, Sharon. Sincerely, Susan from writingstraightfromtheheart.blogspot.com

Curious Cat, I hope I answered you question earlier.

Don't you Eve? I hate the bad guy!

Jan, you worded the cycle perfectly.

Cedar, I hadn't really thought of another bird, but you could be right!

Susan, Somehow I doubt they escaped : (

Linda, I'm sorry to make you sad. My heart ached too for what could have been.

As sad as it is, Mother Nature has her own plan.

What a great color those shells are. A sparrow? Who knew it laid such gorgeous eggs.

The colors in nature are so beautiful - love the blue of those eggs, and it makes me sad when I find things like that too!

The continuous circle of existence. But life always reaffirms itself. Perhaps this story had a happy ending and the little babies will be having babies themselves this summer. Let us hope so,

I feel the same way...I know it is the cycle of life and all of that in nature, but I wish I could save wild critters sometime!

The cycle of life...sometimes very sad.
When I was a little girl I always cried when I watched Wild Kingdom.

The color of those eggs are amazing. Yes, nature can be cruel.

What a lovely capture! I thought only robin's eggs are blue - but I could be mistaken.

I'd be sad, too, even though it is the way life is.
