Morning Sunrise continued

A few more images from this past Saturday morning.

As I stood there shooting the incredible sunrise in my previous post I was startled by the sudden sight and sound of two flocks of Geese flying in from the right.

In the above shot you can see one group in the middle and another on the lower left getting ready to land. It's the first time I've seen Canadian Geese flying in formation since last Spring. It was thrilling, yet my heart sank a bit at the same time. I'm not ready to let go of Summer quite yet.

And just across the street is another wonderful field with the best sunsets around! A 200 acre field which hopefully will become conservation land (instead of a housing development) in the next few years if all goes as planned.

On this morning there was big, deep, thick, layered fog filling up the dips and valleys. Something I can't recall seeing in quite some time.

I wonder what it would be like to walk down into the fog? Do you think it's scary? Within a short few minutes it was already starting to dissipate.

Morning sunrise pre-Hurricane Bill

Ahead of Hurricane Bill we had some pretty heavy rain with tornado warnings Friday evening.

These photos were taken Saturday morning around 6:00 AM. Rain water still lay heavy on the plants, the fog was thick across local fields, you could cut the humidity with a knife, and the most outer first bands of the hurricane can clearly be seen in the sky.

It was one of the prettiest mornings I've seen in a long time

The Big Dog Show

My mother in-law had given me a heads up about The Big Dog Show coming to Portsmouth so we had to make the trip to see what it was all about!

Anyone who lives in the seacoast area and has driven down 495 would immediately recognize these dogs. There's a 16' version of one on the side of the road in Haverhill, MA. These dogs on display are half that size at 8' tall.

We thought this was pretty funny : )

The Big Dog Show is on a 6 city tour. Previously in Haverhill, MA, Dale Rogers and his dogs left Portsmouth on the 19th and can now be found in Ogunquit, ME through August 25. From there he's onto Newburyport, MA, Beverly, MA, and finally Lowell, MA.

Water Dog

In this photo Dale unbolting one of the dogs from the ground in preparation to move it. To avoid ruining the grass, due to the heat, he moved all twenty (20!!!) of dogs twice a day. When I took these photos it wasn't even noon time yet and it was almost 90 degree's. The humidity was coming on strong too. This is a man who is passionate about his dogs (and his work)!

If you get the chance and you're in the area, stop by and visit him! Dale is a very nice guy who will tell you all you ever wanted to know about these incredible creations. If your not from the area, check out his website:

Gloucester Views

I find it so interesting how in the above photo you can't see any of the town at all. Just a short change of location in the below photo and it all pops up!

Such a beautiful place. I hope you don't mind but I still have many more photo's to share in the future of my warm, July day in Gloucester.

Hanging by a thread

Two Saturday's I dropped my younger daughter off at camp. Afterwards I took a drive up to Mt. Chocorua just to see if I could get anything good for pictures, plus it's just a beautiful area.

As I walked from one side of the dirt road to the other, at the small parking area and bridge at the base of the lake, I happened to notice this little worm hanging in the breeze over the road. It must have dropped down a good 6-8 feet from the tree above.

Clicking on any of the images to get a better look

The dirt road is very small that runs along the foot of the lake but I kept hoping the worst wouldn't happen. Sure enough within a few minutes a car came driving through. Did I dare look?

It was still swinging in the breeze when I left : )

After doing a little research it appears this is a Looper Caterpillar. When frightened by a preditor, such as a bird, they will actually bungee jump from a thread connected to their body to escape. After hanging in mid air for a minute or so the Looper will slowly climb back up the thread.

Goldfinch and Common Tansy

Just after I shot the picket fence photo's below I saw this brilliant Goldfinch perched amongst the Common Tansy

Usually I seem to have a difficult time with Goldfinches as they don't like me to get too close. Though a little leary this one was fairly cooperative.

Just behind me in the parking lot sat the cab of a tractor trailor truck, which I thought was rather odd considering New Castle is a very small town and it's a winding road to get here. Definitely not the place you would normally see something like that. But I had to snicker when I looked up into the cab . . .

Do you see the eyes? A bird watcher just like me.

Morning Glory

All of these photos were taken in New Castle, NH around 7:30 am, hence the long shadows

You might be wondering why the red post is there next to the fire hydrant, not to mention that they are so close to the stone wall. It's because the road is about a foot away and it's a very sharp curve. In fact I had to stand in the road, watching my back the whole time, just to take this photo. I risk life and limb for you people. LOL!

So many old homes in New Castle and Portsmouth were built with the road going right by the front door. This family is lucky enough to have a little bit of a yard as a buffer.

And on the side of the house . . .

I can't help it, I'm just a sucker for flowers and white picket fences. Someday I WILL have one of my own.

Just a dab of morning dew still remains

I hope you had a wonderful morning!

Spirit of Massachusetts in full sail

This is the second tall ship to come into Portsmouth Harbor. No big fanfare as it was running a bit late. Though not as elaborate as it's predecessor, the USCG Eagle, it's a beauty all the same.

As they came around the corner where the sun was the brightest it gave this glorious glow, almost as if it were a sunset with the water sparkling like diamonds

The sails must be quite old since they have mold, and a few repairs

A wonderful sailboat with flags from around the world to close things out

US Coast Guard Eagle Tall Ship

This was a very enjoyable shoot on a beautiful morning. The tough part was shooting into the sun, and because of it you'll notice plenty of blue in the photos due to the sun shining on the back of everything. When the USCG Eagle ship comes into the harbor you'll be able to see how white it really is.

It was pretty exciting to see all the boats start heading in! In the far background sits a large tanker. They won't be coming in until high tide later on in the day.

Hoping for full sail but it was not to be

Fort McCleary sits high on a hill across the river in Kittery, Maine

What an incredible view these guys must have! Did you notice the large golden eagle on the bow?

Though the ship might look fairly close in the photos it was actually out there quite a ways. Below was about as much as I could zoom in.

You can see the ship coming around a bit to recieve a little more sun.

Fort McCleary would shoot their cannons to which the USCG Eagle would reply.

Cruising past the Portsmouth Naval Prison which hasn't been occupied since 1974

Below is a brief video I recorded of the Coast Guard tall ship coming up through the harbor. You'll even see the cannons going off at Fort McCleary as well as the ship, but I have to warn you, the video is a bit rough!

You may be wondering where the rest of the ships are. So was everyone else!!! After a few minutes another tall ship came through, though I can't say which one it was since there wasn't any name on the side. I'll show it to you in my next post. That was it though, only 2 tall ships. Apparently the other 2 joined in on the parade further up river.
