Yesterday afternoon I told my husband the only thing I wanted to do was watch the moon rise over the ocean. After dinner we headed to New Castle for an ice cream at the Ice House, with the intent of watching the moon come up by the Portsmouth Harbor lighthouse. Looking at the compass on my iPhone my husband didn't think we'd have an optimal view so he suggested we head down toward the beach.

Driving over the bridge next to the Wentworth by the Sea marina, I looked out towards Portsmouth to catch a spectacular sunset over the water. Just to the left of the sunset (I know it's hard to see the yellow house) sits the Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion. A beautiful place to visit on a warm day.

Within a few minutes we were on Rt. 1a parked near Pebble Cove motel. From this beach you can walk along next to the ocean over to Odiorne Point. I thought it would be a great place to see the moon rise!

Looking south towards Rye

You can expect to see a lot more Queen Anne's Lace in coming posts. It cannot be helped.

Slowly but surely the sky was getting darker. Moonrise was supposed to be at 9:02 so we knew we'd have to wait a little bit longer.

8:30 . . . the mosquitos started attacking. My husband seemed to be the object of their affection too! With 1/2 an hour to go we just couldn't wait. The bugs were brutal.

Just another shot looking toward Odiorne state park on the left. Portsmouth Harbor lighthouse is on the right, identified by the little green light on the horizon.
Now we had to book it back to the car and try for the third time to find a place to view the moon!
As luck would have it we made it to Jenness beach in the nick of time. I jumped out of the car and started shooting. Most of my shots were pretty poor seeing as how it was now dark outside but I managed to get a few decent images. Here's one . . .

And yes, it really was that orange!
Thanks for coming along with us! I hope you enjoyed Saturday night all over again. The evening was so relaxing for my husband and I, and we needed a little 'us' time.
Did you see the full moon this week-end? I hope so!

so beautiful ... hoping to get a shot tonight!
Such a great idea. I'll need to do that one of these nights. :)
We had cloud cover and missed! Your photos are stunning - love that moon shot!
Lovely ... seems so peaceful! Too bad about those pesky bugs. Grrr. :-)
Wonderful pictures
I like them very much
Have a nice day
Mari
How beautiful! Yes, those are the best days! I had stopped blogging (on my other personal blog) because I thought I didn't have anything to blog about (single, no kids, don't get out to do fabulous things) - but seeing this - this is my everyday life.... watching sunsets & doing free simple things. Maybe I should start that blog again! xoxoxo This makes me want to come & visit that area! The freighter reminded me of freighter watching on the great lakes!
Beautiful photographs!
Your photos are amazing! Beautiful, beautiful stuff!
Oh Wow! What gorgeous photos of the sunset and moonrise. I did get to enjoy both this weekend. And it was lovely and hot too. Thanks for sharing your lovely photos. Blessings, Pamela
Just gorgeous, you captured them just perfectly. I really need to get over to the Wentworth sometime this summer!
Nasty bugs. Beautiful images. Great evening.
Such gorgeous images make me want to be right there on the beach with you guys watching that sunset and the moon rising. So glad you had a nice time. Carol
We sat in our back yard in Maine with the fire pit raging! It was just beautiful! Your photos are wonderful!
Even with bug spray on I managed to get about 6 bites!
THANK YOU for posting the sunset picture!!! I was enjoying a much needed weekend away from 'family life' and visiting with my long-ago college roommates in York, ME. We ended up having a very late picnic at the beach Saturday night--what a surprise to see this gorgeous sunset unfold right before our eyes, but no camera to capture the moment.
great sunset, beautiful moonrise, and always nice to see your latest addiction, Queen Annes Lace!
Saw the Buck Moon this weekend, but your photo was much better!! Have a great week.
Absolutely lovely!
Just found your blog. Lovely pictures, I really love the 1st one.
What a beautiful way to just enjoy life! Not many people can watch the moon rise on the ocean (not many people would take the time to, anyways). Wouldn't mind swapping places with you (I <3 New England), for a little while!
Dark or not, the shot of the moon is beautiful. Such a straight line of illumination on the water. Lovely.
The sunset is gorgeous; I especially like the pale colors of the sky in the photo after. The moon is incredible and I appreciate you feeding the bugs long enough to get that great shot.
I love Queen Anne's Lace; it's all dried up here now till next year. I'll look forward to seeing more pictures of it. :)
Sharon, your posts enthrall me! Your photos are always so good!
I missed the full moon this month. We have been buried beneath a layer of heavy cloud and rain for much of the month so far. Suppose to last for the rest of the month.
Hope your summer is a bit better!
You got some great shots. I was trying to get a photo of that big orange moon too but had no tripod. It's so difficult when it's pitch black outside. You did a great job!
Sharon these photos are so very beautiful. I love the moon and how it shimmers on the water. Stunning.
Wonderful story, and photos especially the last one! Try the "Off" brand belt clip on device for keeping bugs away. Works!!
What SLR are you using? I am upgrading to a Canon 18mp this next month. I LOVE NEW ENGLAND and I think I want to move there from the Rockies I am in now. Just curious...never give this up....you are capturing the SPIRIT of New England very well....and I am using that for thoughts I am using for my novel. Great stuff here

Even if you didn't get the 'ideal' moon photos you imagined it looks like you had a great evening! I love evenings like those spent wandering around and doing nothing in particular, except taking in the sights.
Also, I greatly love the first Queen Anne's Lace photo you posted! What great composition :)
I love your blog. The pictures are so wonderful. But the moon shot is over the top!
Hi, it's me again. I wanted to say thanks for visiting my blog and your kind words. Much appreciated. :)
Lovely pictures.
Great captures Sharon! And best of all was the time spent with your hubby I'm sure :)
The moon is incredible! I love the path of it on the water!! I LOVE the two shots of the QAL!!! If you check my blog, you will see I am a big fan of it, too, so post away!!
"You can expect to see a lot more Queen Anne's Lace in coming posts. It cannot be helped."
I know - right?
Wonderful post. Thank you! :)
Oh Sharon, what a beautiful set of photos! You are making me long for the ocean... And for New England, too! Thanks for sharing your Saturday. xoxo
One: These are gorgeous, as always. I missed you while I was away.
And Two: Never apologize for Queen Anne's Lace.
xo
I had to chuckle a few times reading this, Sharon. You are very determined and thank goodness you are – you got wonderful photos and a great story to go with them. :)
these were all wonderful shots, I felt like I was there with you!
I love the first photo of the queen anns lace and the tree...you look purdy sweet too! :)

These are gorgeous Sharon! So glad you got the photos you wanted.
I miss this place so much! We stayed at Pebble Cove last October. The moon is gorgeous, glad you got the shot!
