Although I'm not very good at shooting butterflies, moths, dragonflies, etc., just for fun I give it a shot every now and then. Sometimes I get lucky with a decent image.
This is a tiny thing. About 1" long. It's also the kind of butterfly that flies around in circles with another butterfly of the same kind.

We have an old, cheap Butterfly/Moth book but can't find this little gem. So tell me . . .

*Thanks to Eve who was the first to ID my little Butterfly! She told me it's a Common Ringlet without the ring, and somewhat of a poor flier. She's right about that, they don't fly to long before landing again. Thanks again, Eve!

This is a Common Ringlet without the ring. They are really weak fliers that kind of just flit around the fields. You should find some with the ring on the forewing. Oh it's a butterfly! They are not down here in the south but were in my fields in NY.

You know... when I have shot butterflies in the past there are some that I simply could not identify. This very much looks like a moth, but a beautiful photo of one!

He's a cute fella, don't you think? The other day a large dragonfly teased me by flyng all around me forever...without ever landing on something so I could try to get a shot. I was literally begging him out loud to land on something, anything.

Have you visited the Butterfly Conservancy in Niagara Ontario Canada? It is a delightful place.
I learned that there is an easy way to distinguish moths from butterflies but of course it eludes me right now. I might be back.

Here is the gist of what I remember:
"Moths usually rest with their wings spread out to their sides. Butterflies frequently fold their wings above their backs when they are perched although they will occasionally 'bask' with their wings spread for short periods."

I have to so practice with butterflies.... Your photo just makes me want to run right out and do so! This little sweetie is a lovely thing. How could he be a "common" anything?
