Originally I thought this was a Painted Lady Butterfly, however, Eve has corrected me. It's actually an American Lady. That Eve, she's a smart cookie.
It sure was frustrating me. I kept shooting and shooting in hopes it would open it's wings. Finally it turned, opens it's wings, and flew off. Nice. Real nice.
* Btw, has anyone else noticed a lack of Hummingbirds this Spring at feeders? My dad thinks it may be weather related so I did a little research. Turns out the same thing happened in 2005, very few Hummers returned in 2004 due to what is believed to be weather related storms in the Gulf. Any thoughts?

I'm not sure if it's a painted lady or not. The orange sure looks it, though. It's those swirls at the ends that have me uncertain.

The photo is just magical Sharon. Might it be to early for Hummingbirds in our area? I too have not seen any as of yet. Happy Mother's Day to you. Elise is lovely and I so enjoyed the story of the older couple you befriended.

Your close, it's an American Lady. Note the two big eye spots on the hind wing. The Painted Lady has four smaller spots! (Don't think I'm so smart...I have to look them up every year!) A beautiful photo. As for the hummingbirds...it is a bit early...hopefully they will show in number soon.
Only one hummer at our feeder at he didn't show up until May 5th. We had a colder winter this year than the 2 prior so not sure if that has had an effect on their return or not. *shrugs* Who knows.

Actually we usually have male Hummers arriving by the end of April. With the warm weather we've had everything has been early so I figured the Hummingbirds would be too. As I say though, we've barely seen any.
My parents usually have a couple/few by now but they haven't even seen one! My dad is a little miffed by the whole thing.

Hmmm - I usually only have a couple of hummers each year. I've seen my pair almost every day though. Poor little things; they fly so far!

Sharon the butterfly shot is stunning! The detail and open wings, just awesome :) We have lots of hummers at the feeder and I keep swearing I won't put anymore feeders out. Said that last year and we finished up the season with 5 feeders sometimes filling them up twice each day. Seriously. I Have read that you count the ones you see and multiply by four.
I can't be that smart of a cookie, Sharon, I spelled "you're" wrong! hahahahaha!! You're right about the hummers being earlier where you are. We didn't get them until Mother's Day (today) in northern NY. Happy Mother's day by the way!
If you can believe it we're only a few degrees warmer than you are this morning here in northern Alabama! 47 degrees! I hope the hummers stay warm!

I've had one little male hummer coming to the feeder, and I had a female try to get stuck in my garage, but the numbers have definitely been down thus far.

I am in the upstate of South Carolina and the hummers have returned right on schedule here. I have wondered if they go back to the same place year after year because they know where the feeder is and I know to put it out when I see them looking for it. The kids gave me a new feeder for Mother's Day so It is out there and waiting for them today.

Wow - it seems early for butterflies to me! Especially in your neck of the woods! But, nonetheless, it's a beauty with the orange and black colors against the purplish blossoms.
