Recently my daughter was staying at a friends house for a sleepover. She had taken the bus there after school so I had to go pick her up in the morning. Upon arriving and walking up to the front porch this is what I saw:
As I walked up onto the porch I thought for sure they would fly away so I inched up ever so slowly until ....
Isn't he such a handsome fella?
And she is an absolute angel with those big beautiful eyes staring down
Within a few moments of taking the picture he flew over into their nest to watch over the eggs
Seeing them zoom in and out of the porch right in front of me was an amazing sight!
And over in the other corner sat this sweet pair. He had his eye on her, and me, though his eyes are very difficult to photograph
Jeff, the dad of my daughters friend, said it takes them a month to build the nest! He told me it's a real sight watching them bring in the mud by the mouthful. His neighbor puts up boards on his deck so the Barn Swallows can't nest but Jeff and his family embrace nature, and they should considering there is an enormous, beautiful field behind their home with the most incredible sunsets! * After another soggy, wet, cloudy day today it appears we will actually see the sun tomorrow! Oh please lets hope the forecasters know what they're talking about!!!

Oh Sharon, those are so wonderful!! It made me smile so broadly to see that nest tucked in a place that looks just like my porch. Oh, I so hope...

I thought you might enjoy this post. I loved yours! They are such wonderful, aerodynamic birds. Wish I had a porch to let them nest in. You are so lucky!

Amazing how they just sat so still and watched you. They must be used to seeing people coming and going from the house. Great shots, Sharon and sending sunshine your way... AGAIN... sheesh, time for that rainy cycle to end up there in your area.

Goodness, when I first saw the picture I thought they were part of the lamps! So symmetrical. How lovely to discover they are a real nesting pair. Nature is the prettiest ornament.
I thought for sure in that first picture that they weren't real, and that the lamps had been crafted that way! FABULOUS!

Now those are my kind of people. Once a bird built a nest on my porch light,... I refused to turn it on until the babies had fledged. Nature is where it is all at.

I LOVE barn swallows. They're so beautiful, and perky, and swift. Good for you for getting such great photos! I especially like the one with the little fellow perched on the light.
Jeff's neighbour isn't very clever...swallows help to keep the insect population down and with a nest full of hungry mouths to feed, they came make a big difference.
I also thought they weere part of the light fixtures at first.:)

I loved these photos. I know some other people that don't like having them next because they haul mud up in corners, but I think it is neat that the family you wrote about it like them there and allow them there.
They are handsome birds...I loved that they looked straight in your camera lens for a shot of them!

I find that people who love to photograph find the most amazing surprises....It shows all the beauty one can find when they look for it....love these photos and respect your daughter's friend and her parents for letting nature surround them....:-) Hugs

Wish I had the opportunity to go back and take more updated photos but that hasn't happened. Jayne's blog certainly shows how wonderful the Barn Swallow babies are though!

the herons are off Pine St. or Rd. in Brentwood which is by the new High school. I don't remember exactly how we walked in because I was with my husband. If you e-mail me I will give you better directions. I won't be around much this week though.
The swallows look like they are part of the light fixtures in the first photo. They certaily are cool birds to watch fly. Great shots.
I just "stumbled" here..and love seeing the swallow pictures. They must have gotten used to people to allow you that close. This is such a good lesson for the kids ( and interesting for adults too) Thanks for the pictures!

Aren't those little swallows beautiful? Some people complain about all the mess they make but I'd sure put up with it to have them that close to me.
