Settled in 1623 Portsmouth has some wonderful historic colonial homes and views to offer. Strolling through the old narrow streets where the houses sit literally right on the street is always a treat on a warm summers day. Many of the gardens of these old homes are well tended and quite beautiful.
Located on the Piscatiqua river the Memorial Bridge connecting Portsmouth to Kittery, Maine was the first major vertical lift bridge built in the nation. In the summertime the bridge raises and lowers every 1/2 hour during the day to allow sail boats or ships to pass through.
Dedicated in 1923 to World War I sailors and soldiers, currently this bridge is considered historic and on the national endangered list. In need of a major overhaul which will cost multi-millions it’s anyone’s guess what will happen in the next few years. Demolition or restoration … surely it will be a hot topic among the locals and state officials.

We must just miss eachother where ever we go...:) I was on the other side taking pictures of Portsmouth, Memorial bridge and Pierce Isle a few weeks ago. In fact, I had a lobster roll at Geno's. Wouldn't that be funny if I got a shot of you on Pierce Isle and you got a shot of me at Geno's?
That WOULD be funny! One of these days we'll catch up with each other I just know it!

What wonderful pictures, to me there isn't a lot better than New England, fishing villages and old wharfs. Well, maybe the smell of the Atlantic.

Great shots--love Portsmouth, even though I have only been in town once a few years ago. Drive thru / or by it a million times on my way to the old homestead in Brunswick!

Your pictures make me think of my son's favorite childhood book "The Oxcart Man"... In it, he goes to Portsmouth to sell his goods. Your pictures remind me of the illustrations.

My beloved Portsmouth! Thank you SO much for these lovely images of a town I will always love. I used to live with my grandmother on Gates Street -- just a few streets up from Prescott Park. My dad did work in Strawberry Banke for several years. I sure miss that beautiful town. It was so great to see all those beautiful shots you took. My heart just soared all the way down here in FL.

I always enjoy hearing from someone who knows Portsmouth but hasn't been there in a while. Knowing I've brought back memories makes me feel like I've done something special.
Glad everyone enjoyed the photos. Though not a big city, Portsmouth has great history. To me it's a city that is best enjoyed during the Summer or early Fall.

I loved these scenic photos - really makes me want to visit! I hope they restore that bridge - it would be a shame if they didn't.
Oh, Sharon, you're making me homesick to go visit New England. And, to think I just turned down a family reunion invitation in Maine because my daughter will be in the thick of an intense 5-week semester taking STATISTICS of all things.
We spent a day in Portsmouth two summers ago when we visited the area for a wedding - what a beautiful city you have there. (And yes, I'm a jealous Californian.) :-)
