Northern Goshawk

Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I do believe this is the Accipiter Northern Goshawk. She's playing a little hide and seek.

Northern Goshawk

Peek-a-boo, I see you!

We do tend to have quite a few birds of prey in the area so it's always a treat when they come right down into the yard. Though I fret the whole time about the safety of the Cardinals or darling little innocent birds, like Nuthatches, Woodpeckers, Purple Finches, etc. On a normal basis we have a very small supply of nuisance birds so for that I am thankful.

This particular day, Thanksgiving, she was looking for a warm meal. A warm meal that was not to be found in my yard.

Northern Goshawk

Our bird feeders are quite far from the house. I'd say about 30 ft. Unfortunately it has to be outside the dogs fence because our Pug, Winston, likes to eat anything in sight. Including left over birdseed shells. We do have invisible fence around the outside of the fence but he doesn't go out there to often. Anyway, having the feeders so far away makes it very difficult to take pictures with my 7.1 mp, 10x optical zoom camera. I got lucky this day.

The Goshawk sat in the tree contemplating the situation and looking regal. Finally she could wait no longer and dove directly into the Burning Bushes next to the feeder. How she didn't hurt herself I don't know but she seemed rather distraught when she came up empty. Since we did have a few House Sparrows that particular day my hopes were for her success. But alas, she moved on.

It took me a while to figure out what bird this was even with a bird book, only because it appears as though she has a white ring all the way around her neck. However, since she so closely represents the Goshawk, including the white rump, that's what I'm going with.

I find myself with SO many pictures from late Summer and Fall that I had intended on posting. Does anyone else have this problem? I tend to hoard them for fear of running out.

Love the last photo... we get hawks, red-tail I believe. Hubby sees them overhead from time to time and this past fall even saw one come down quite low hunting on our property. Have yet to see one land on our land. Hawks are such great looking birds. Our bird feeder is busy all the time right now... lots of cardinals as well as smaller birds.

P.S. I've been known to hoard a few photos as well... then forget I have them... DUH. haha

We have hawks and you can often see them sitting on fence posts waiting for a little field mouse or something to stroll along. My cat takes care of most of the birds around here. He goes into the yard and they swoop out of the trees and dive bomb him. It's hilarious! Maybe with my new camera I can get some good shots. Love your photos!

Sharon,

You sure got some awesome pictures of the hawk. My sons could tell you which species it is for sure.
Kevin was studing his NEW bird watching book they received as a wedding gift, while Jamie was at work last week. His friends know HIM well. I don't know what the gift has to do with setting up a home though:) lol They must not be married.
I have a ton of pictures that I took to post also. I am taking a little break to spend time with my husband who took 11 days off for the holidays.. It has been good to spend this time together and relax.

Thanks for the visit...Natalie even changed the songs around for you for a while:) I don't have the password..lol

Daughters are great!

The in flight photo is spectacular, Sharon! Whenever I see an interesting bird in our yard, it takes me forever to get the right lens on, and then it's too late! You're johnny-on-the-spot!

Fantastic hawk photos. I totally understand how you feel having a hawk in your yard. They are beautiful creatures to see, but you worry about your favorite smaller feathered friends.

She's beautiful Sharon! We normally get either Cooper's or Red-tailed in our tree line. A shame she couldn't find a house sparrow hor d'oeuvre!

Okay, Let's dig out the field guides. Looking at the guides, it is still inconclusive...where is that Peterson's Hawks book I bought 20 years ago...

Looking at the first photo, we have an accipiter. Streak breast, rounded tail. It's a coops or a goshawk. Can't see the face, but the bird is big and chunky.

Looking at photo 2, we see the breast streaking, white around the vent, and irregular banding in the tail. Tail is rounded. Eye could be yellow or red. Hard to tell. Faint white eyebrow. Rounded head. Looking more like a goshawk than a coops.

Photo three shows streaking down between the legs and down the legs, very faint eyebrow, yellow eye. The irregular banding in the tail.

I'm 92.6% sure you have a Northern Goshawk. I'd like to see more eye stripe but your bird looks too big to be a Sharpie and the tail banding is very irregular.

Immature accipiters can be tough, especially because there is some variation is size and plumage with the sexes.

Thanks Steve. I too was going through my bird guide but just couldn't be sure. It's just not often I see one of these birds up close. The one thing that seemed to give it away was the white rump.

Hi Dawn, Thank you for stopping by! I'll be sure to visit your blog soon : )

Di, being that you are in the mountains you probably have more hawks than you know, but Red Tails seem to be very popular. Think I'll start a folder just for blog photos so I don't have to keep digging through old folders! Glad I'm not alone.

Beth, that's an odd wedding gift! lol! Enjoy your time off. Looks like your daughter has hijacked your blog and is holding it hostage. haa haaa!!!

Thank you Laura. I'm looking on ebay for a more powerful used camera but at a reduced price. Hopefully I'll come up with something soon.

Kim, I hope your little Junco has flown the coop by now!

Jayne, I can only imagine that little lady was as disappointed as I was.

Sharon, what incredibly beautiful photographs you take! We've had a hawk or a kestrel (can you tell I'm not really good at identifying hawk type birds?) landing in the tree next to our house for the past several days, around 2:30 in the afternoon. I'm fascinated to have such a closeup view, but as much as I understand the laws of nature, I would have a hard time watching if he caught one of the mourning doves, cardinals, juncos, or any of the other birds that visit the feeder outside our dining room window... I love visiting your blog - you really do capture the beauty of New England with your camera (and you have cute fur babies in your sidebar!!)... Donna @ An Enchanted Cottage

Hi Sharon, first your pictures are GREAT! I had a Northern Goshawk visit my guineas this fall see... http://sunnysideup-eve.blogspot.com/2008/12/guinea-vs-hawk.html
I made the call after at first thinking it was a young red-tail by sight, but then looking at the pictures changed my tune. I then sent the picture to one of my expert friends and got it confirmed. It was very exciting as I'm sure was yours! Great job! And yes I think I could go back and find a lot of photos that I could have posted but didnt.

I love these beautiful pictures....I'm a bit of a bird freak now that I live in New England and there are so many pretty ones to look at. I bought a pair of binoculars and a bird book just to keep up with the ones that come into my yard! I've even called my hubby at work all excited because a new type was at the feeder. He still thinks I'm a bit nuts lol.
